Basic Needs

We do not need expensive things, like a golden water tap in a bathroom, to create luxury; we would rather install a cheap bathtub with a great view. We explore and question the potential of basic needs and find new interpretations of the appropriate archetypes. We design houses like taylored suits, fitted for the specific needs of our clients. Spaces are transformed into landscapes of unique situations for living.

Software drives hardware

A city is not just the sum of houses, streets and squares. It also consists of social order, relationships and memories.
We do not believe solely in the sufficiency of built structure. We rather develop urban software to increase the activity of public space. Each project deals with the appropriation of public space.

Scenography

We engage in museum and exhibition spatial design with the focus on how to communicate urban concepts, archives and cultural heritage. As exhibition architects we work at the interface between scientists and visitors.
Models help to generate visions of future developments.

We call our method of working "performative" when something emerges through action. It is not the performance of an action which needs this performative method, but the product, the starting condition and the construction. Sometimes the presence of an audience creates special conditions. The participation of the public generates a field of service, which normally does not exist. Through the performance "client and consulter" a useful model evolves. This model situation helps us to experiment with the break up of a normal design job. The inclusion of the user in the creative process is related to the method of "Design Thinking".

In between

A major focus of work is the reactivation of spaces through temporary use. Semantically used places are filled with new content. Often, access to urban wastelands or empty buildings is only made possible or legalized by temporary use. Legibility has also been lost in some areas and rooms, where spatial potentials are waiting to be brought back to life through temporary use.
In between are all temporary projects and those at the interface between architecture and art, theater, design; between public and private; land and water; between categories and more.

Workshops, teaching, texts and exhibitions

In Academic Space the feedback between theory and practice takes place. Workshops, lectures, exhibitions and texts offer platforms for experiments, speculation and friction. What do place, space and context mean in a globalized world? If the same facades, shops and products make our cities more and more alike, it is important to constantly question how we want to live together and build in the future.
